Cozumel..the floating gem of the Mexican Caribbean
Life here remains simple and nobody is in a hurry.  Hundreds of species of vibrantly colored fish swim through vast coral reefs in the crystal-clear turquoise Caribbean Sea, known for its visibility of up to 200 feet!  Cozumel is not only a SCUBA diver's dream, but a treasure-filled, fun, and romantic getaway for the non-diver as well.  There lies here a bounty of green, lush jungle, white sand beaches, and the lively town of San Miguel.

Cozumel is located twelve miles off the southern coast of the Yucatan, just across from Playa del Carmen and nearby Akumal. Cozumel is a destination for people seeking a relaxing, laid back vacation that includes the island's world renowned diving or snorkeling its fabled coral reefs. Cozumel's limestone shore is surrounded by temperate, crystal clear waters which range from stunning turquoise to deep indigo.  Snorkelers and divers will not want to miss the famous cenotes of the spectacular Dos Ojos Cave System. Cozumel's west coast is where you'll find the majority of the island's development. The town of San Miguel, the airport, and the hotels are all located on the western side of the island. Fortunately, massive resort development is paralyzed by a lack of potable water and a desire to protect the island's delicate ecosystem. This helps keep island life simple, and is hands-down the favorite for people seeking a serene Caribbean island vacation.

The island of Cozumel is approximately 30 miles long.  The north-end resorts are about 10 minutes from the airport and the south-end resorts are about 20-25 minutes away.  A very popular way to sightsee the island is via moped.  The roads are all small, 2-lane, and low speed limit making for a safe venture for those on 2 wheels.

Take a short trip on the Ferry to the mainland for a day of shopping, dining, and sightseeing.  If you are wanting to travel from the island to the mainland you can go via plane, but the more popular (and less expensive) method is via the Cozumel Ferry.  It runs about every 30-45 minutes between Playa del Carmen and the ride is about 40 minutes long.  The ferries (pictured here) are large passenger craft and even carry a few cars on each trip.
